The Shadow

"Mommy!  Mommy!" cried the boy, huddled in his sheets,
"The shadow, Mommy, on the wall!  It wants me for its' eats!"
"Hush now little man," she said and flicked the light switch on,
"See now with the shining light, the shadow man is gone."
She kissed his cheek and tucked his chin, and wished him sweet goodnight,
Then walked back over to the door, and turned back off the light.
"It's okay," she reassured, and closed the door a crack,
And hummed a tune on down the hall, with the shadow at her back.

Flicking on the TV set, she settled on a show,
And with the scary movie on, her nervousness did grow.
"Don't be silly," she told herself and brushed away her fear,
But then she saw a shade of black moving in the mirror.
Turning quickly with a start, she caught the shadow there,
"A trick of light," she laughed out loud, "It gave me such a scare!"

Having had enough TV, she read a book instead,
A light and bright and cheery book, nothing to give dread.
She snuggled back onto the couch and pulled upon her legs,
Her cuddly blanket nice and warm, and in her book engaged.
She got a little drowsy, and was just about to sleep,
When underneath her blanket, she felt a crawly creep!
She flung the blanket off and screamed! And saw a shadow fall,
And where it landed on the floor, towards her it began to crawl….

In disbelief she cowered back, "This can't be happening!"
Yet closer, closer still it came, silently slithering.
"You're just a shadow!" the mother cried, as it grabbed onto her leg,
"You're just a shadow!  You're not real!", then she began to beg,
"Please, please!  Let me go!  I'll do anything!"
But the shadow crept further still, smothering her screams…

"Mommy?  Mommy?" he cried again, awakened by the noise,
"Mommy?  Are you there?" he asked, stepping among his toys.
He creaked the door another crack, and peeked his forehead through,
And saw the shadow finish up his meal of mother stew.
The shadow looked and gave a wink, and the boy winked in return,
Then back into his room he fled, so solemn and so stern.

"Daddy!  Daddy!  Are you there?  Daddy I'm afraid!"
And Dad came running in to soothe, being oh so brave.
"A shadow Daddy, on the wall!  It want's me for its' eats!"
"I cried for Mommy, but she's not here, save me Daddy please!"
Cinnamon discovered how much she enjoyed writing thanks to a simple family contest.  That contest has now evolved into a motivational website, www.whitehole.net, to encourage writers.  Cinnamon also realized her dream of being a movie critic, even though not professionally, and posts frequently on her movie blog, Cin's Movie Critiques, at www.whitehole.net/cinblog/
